St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church

600 Pitt Street, corner of Franklin Ave. and Pitt St., the sanctuary faces Franklin Ave.

“Our Mission is to Imitate Christ in all we do.” Above the entrance to the sanctuary is the scripture from Isaiah 56:7, “My house shall be called the house of prayer for all people.”

The congregation in the early days met in Brace Brothers’ Steam Laundry in Park Place and before then the basement of Hamilton Hall, a building that had been damaged by fire and abandoned. The Annuals at the Village page record the congregation’s beginning.

St. Stephen’s is a long-time partner with the Wilkinsburg Community Ministry. “This crucial Wilkinsburg ministry helps to keep Wilkinsburg citizens in a healthier place. It works to reduce hunger, to ensure the health of its resident[s], especially senior citizens, to help economically challenged families with the basic necessities and to keep the streets safer.”
