Rev. Thomas Brooks organized the Mt. Calvary Baptist Church in 1922 at Penn Avenue and Coal Street. The congregation moved to a new church at 1036 Penn Avenue in 1923.
Mt. Calvary Baptist Church moved in 1965 to the former James Street Methodist Episcopal Church at 1511 Swissvale Avenue.
Praise Chapel has a listing in 1975 and 1977 with Rev. Kathryn Van Fleet, and a listing in 1983 for 1036 Penn Avenue.
New Testament Baptist Church purchased the building in 1994. The congregation added a church steeple.
