James Shipman: An Appreciation

James Shipman Sculpture Garden

On Rebecca Avenue, just past Mulberry Street and the Hamnett Place sign, is James Shipman's sculpture with the cylindrical shape. At the corner of Rebecca and Jeanette Street is the Landmarks Preservation Resource Center. Often James Shipman's sign was on the sidewalk, inviting folks into his studio in the Landmarks Center.

James welcomed people to his studio and met them with a graciousness and openness. It was a chance to learn about the origins of art. When he was in his studio, the sculpture garden was open. Over the years it kept evolving. It is a gift to the community.

James Shipman’s Sculpture Garden

sun dial on the inscriptions of arcs,
a fence that is a shadow,
transfiguration of tools
and the curves of springs,
a juggling in space,
reddish brown
and the patina of iron,
plumb lines
to the invisible,
pottery holding
the memory of eternity,
the book of braille,
and what is seen
beyond sight
